Step by Step to become a Licensed Foster Parent in CA
Foster Care Recruitment and Training Information
I will list some common questions about Fostering
Can I Become a Foster Parent?
I became a foster parent not knowing what I was getting myself into I was not sure if I could do it working a full time job but I managed it.
I believe that anyone who is willing to provide love and care to a child while the parents work on themselves and can have the children safely placed back with them.
If you have space and extra love in your home and heart you can become a Foster Parent.
How could I love a child and watch them leave?
Fostering is not easy you do not get to always see the results of your work
Sometimes the children you nurture will leave your home and you will never get to see them again
However the child you fostered will never forget that scary time in their lives when everyone and everything they loved was taken from them.
Everything you do will make a difference in the child’s life as they have suffered so much trauma already
Children will remember that smiling face that calm voice all the accommodations you made to make them feel at home.
It is rewarding to watch the smiles on their face when they reunite with family and stay connected and you had a part in that.
Will I get to keep the child I foster?
The misconception of fostering is that you will get to keep the children you foster forever if you choose to
However it is a lot more complicated than that sometimes parents get stuck in a hard place and they are able to work hard to get their child back.
Sometimes in other situations the child must be adopted because they cannot safely be returned home.
The main goal of fostering in to be an intervention when families have safety issues in there homes.
It is Child Welfare’s Job to offer services to help the parent be able to reunite with their child.
If the family cannot safely care for the child then a new permanency plan is decided on.
I have seen plans that include family members being assessed for placement.
Friends of the family assisting with supervising visitations and also being assessed for placement
If all other options are exhausted then the foster family will have the option to adopt.
How Long will it take to become a licensed foster parent?
The process depends based on the county that you live in but the entire process can take anywhere from 90 days to 6 months being the longest.
